Hygiene, protection and consent
Simple, consistent hygiene and honest protection habits prevent most avoidable problems. None of this needs special products.
Daily hygiene
Warm water and mild soap are enough. Dry thoroughly, wear breathable underwear and avoid harsh or perfumed products on sensitive skin.
- Rinse gently if uncircumcised
- Change out of sweaty clothing promptly
- Trim carefully with clean tools
Protection and testing
Condoms used correctly reduce the risk of most STIs and pregnancy. Regular testing is routine adult healthcare.
- Check expiry and use water- or silicone-based lubricant
- Test between partners or at least annually if sexually active
- Tell partners promptly if a test is positive
Consent, always
Consent is enthusiastic, informed, specific and revocable at any point. Alcohol and pressure invalidate it.
Skin and irritation
Redness, itching or unusual smell often reflects irritation, but can indicate infection. Get anything persistent checked.
